2023 - Beacon and Blaze
Golden retriever Beacon and chocolate lab Blaze, the University mascots, join a long history of beloved Valparaiso University dogs as they cheer on our athletes, add spirit to student and alumni gatherings, and represent Valpo in the community as friendly faces and very good dogs. Beacon and Blaze were introduced in 2022.
The following previous years' ornaments are also still available for $15 each:
2022 - The Reddel Memorial Organ
The Reddel family provided the principal gift for the Chapel of the Resurrection’s grand instrument, designed by former University organist Dr. Paul Bunjes ’41 and Herman Schlicker. Completed and installed in summer 1959, it underwent an extensive expansion and renovation in 1995. Here, the organ is illuminated by light from the Meier Music Window.
2021 - The Kissing Bridge (new design)
In the mid-1880s, a bridge was constructed to span the railroad tracks that connected campus to Sager’s Lake. The bridge was said to bring good luck to couples who could kiss for the entire time that a train was passing under the bridge. Their entire faces would be covered in soot—except their lips.
2020 - Harre Union
Alan Harre (1940–2020) was Valparaiso University's 17th president, serving from October 1988 until June 2008. During his tenure, he ushered in the "Age of Advancement," overseeing three major campaigns and raising over $360 million in gifts to the University. The Harre Union was dedicated in honor of Alan and Diane Harre in January 2009.
2019 - University Seal (released 2021)
To commemorate the 160th Anniversary of Valparaiso University, this year’s alumni ornament is the seal of the Lutheran institution, which was introduced in 1926 with the important elements remaining unchanged. “V” represents the Institution’s name, the torch signifies learning and light, and “In luce tua videmus lucem” to emphasize the character of the University.
2018 - Out of the Darkness ... Light!
Art meets science as two alumni Carol '47 and Edwin '48 Engerer, together with Professor Steven and Barbara Engerer, commissioned a custom piece of art to be on permanent display in the Center for the Sciences. Entitled "Out of Darkness ... Light!" features 348 total pieces of glass-blown art. Local artists at Hot Shop Valpo dedicated more than six months to create the installation, which represents the color frequencies of light. Light is a metaphor for both the search for understanding and the quest for knowledge.
2017 - Christopher Center
This four-story, 105,000-square-foot building was dedicated in 2004 through the generosity of Jay Christopher ’67 and Doris Christopher. The Christopher Center was named in recognition of the family’s many ties to the University. The library has a computer-driven, robotic automated storage and retrieval system that provides efficient storage of books, a café, a large community room that is used for many campus events, and numerous group study areas.
2016 - Forever Valpo
The Campaign for Our Future is a $250 million endowment-focused fundraising initiative that will secure Valpo's leadership position among faith-based colleges and universities. Between 2016 and 2021, the Campaign will raise endowed funds for scholarship, faculty development, and programs that prepare all students for lives of leadership and service.
2013 - Lightfall
This piece captures Valparaiso’s motto: “In luce tua, videmus lucem... In Thy light, we see light,” and the theology of Psalm 36:9 on which the motto is based. The imagery of the sun’s rays flowing from the heavens invites guests to feel the enormity of God’s blessings showering down on Valparaiso University and empowering us to share these blessings with others. The mosaic connects the role of the Duesenberg Welcome Center to that of the University, introducing visitors to Valpo’s mission and vision.
