About the Native Language Fair Honor Fund

The Oklahoma Native American Youth Language Fair is the largest event celebrating Indigenous languages in the country. Oklahoma is home to 39 federally recognized tribal nations and 34 Indigenous North American languages, making our state on of the richest in terms of Indigenous cultural and linguistic diversity. The accelerated loss of Indigenous languages has been described as one the major crises facing current generations. While many tribes now have language programs dedicated to revitalizing their languages, the fact remains that our greatest and most precious sources of Indigenous language knowledge are the elder speakers who grew up living through their Native languages. Many of these speakers have dedicated their lives to passing the language on to the next generation. This fund is created in honor and remembrance of past Native speakers and those close to the Native American Youth Language Fair with the purpose of continuing their legacy and creating a sustainable future for the fair.
