In memory of Dr. Kenneth Crawford, the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences will present two memorial awards to students with exemplary performance in the Synoptic Meteorology and Measurements classes.Dr. Kenneth Crawford was the director of the Oklahoma Climatological Survey for 20 years, co-founder of the Oklahoma Mesonet, professor at OU’s School of Meteorology, and mentor for many students. During his 20-year tenure at OU, he supervised more Masters and PhD students than any other faculty at the School of Meteorology. This is in addition to the many undergraduate students that he taught and mentored over the years. He always had a line of students at his door.
Learn More about Dr. Kenneth Crawford Dr. Crawford’s passion was to teach synoptic meteorology and help students learn the processes of the atmosphere and how they control and change meteorological patterns. While Dr. Crawford never taught the measurements course at OU, he obsessed over instrumentation and observations. The success of the Oklahoma Mesonet is a testimony to his commitment to this obsession. Before his passing in 2014, Dr. Crawford expressed a desire for his fund to financially assist students who shared in his passions. Today, two Kenneth Crawford awards carry on his legacy by recognizing outstanding performance and student initiative in these two topics of meteorology.
