Annual and Endowed Scholarships

Whether you make a gift to an established scholarship fund or decide to fund a scholarship of your own, your generosity has an immediate and lasting impact on University of Portland students. In each of the scenarios below, you select the criteria for awarding the scholarship and are also invited to meet your scholarship’s recipient at our annual Spring Scholarship Luncheon.

Named Scholarship Awards: Gifts of $1,500 or more can establish a Named Scholarship Award giving donors the option to participate in how the award is designated and named.

Renewable Named Scholarship Awards:
Gifts of $4,000 or more can provide continuing support to the scholarship recipient from freshman year until graduation through a Renewable Scholarship Award. Donors make a 4-year commitment at $1,000 per year so that students that continue to meet the designated criteria can continue to receive the scholarship for all 4 years. These awards are a tremendous help to students when they are developing a comprehensive college financing plan to complete their degree.

Endowed Scholarship Awards: Gifts of $50,000 or more given can establish Endowed Scholarship Awards and provide donors with the opportunity to make scholarship awards in perpetuity. These gifts can be made in the form of a pledge, and the terms of the pledge can be set according to the donor’s timetable. Once the gift amount reaches $50,000, the principle typically earns enough investment income to make a meaningful scholarship award every year thereafter.

To establish a new annual, renewable, or endowed scholarship, contact Connie Ozyjowski.

Matching Gifts

Double or triple the impact of your gift to UP with the help of your employer.

If your employer sponsors a matching gift program, you can easily double or triple the impact of your gift. More than 10,000 employers in the United States match the charitable gifts of their employees. Each year, the University of Portland receives over $100,000 in matching gifts that provide additional resources for tuition support, academic programs, athletics, and other student life initiatives.

Participating companies will match employee gifts dollar for dollar. Some will even double or triple your gift. Many companies will also support charitable giving by employee spouses, retirees, board members, and others.

Please note that matching gifts will be directed to the same area of interest at the University as your personal gift, unless company policy dictates otherwise. You may contact Gift Services at 503.943.8003 or giving@up.edu if you have questions about getting your gift matched.

Stocks and Securities

Do you own appreciated stocks? Stock gifts present a great opportunity to support UP’s mission-driven education, because your gift is mutually beneficial — we receive the full value of the stock, while you avoid paying capital gains tax. With a stock gift, you can take a charitable deduction for the current value of your shares. This can result in tax savings of up to 70%, making your gift more valuable at no added cost to you.

For example, say you want to make a $10,000 gift this year. Here’s the difference:

Cash

Gift                                                             $10,000
Marginal income tax rate (28%)                       x.28
Tax savings from deduction                         ($2800)
Net cost of cash gift                                      $7200

Stock Gift

Gift                                                               $10,000 stock
Cost basis                                                      $4,000
Capital Gain if sold                                         $6,000
Capital Gains tax rate (15%)                              x.15
Capital gains tax avoided                                 ($900)
Net cost of stock gift                                        $6300

What is a QCD/IRA Rollover?

The qualified charitable distribution (QCD), or charitable IRA rollover, is a special provision allowing certain donors to exclude from taxable income -- and count toward their required minimum distribution -- certain transfers of Individual Retirement Account (IRA) assets that are made directly to public charities, such as the University of Portland. Since it was first made available in 2006, many UP donors age 70-1/2 or older have used this popular option to support the University.

The following rules apply to IRA gifts:

  • You must be age 70-1/2 or older at the time of the gift
  • You can give a cumulative total of up to $100,000 per person
  • You can give a total of up to $200,000 per couple (ONLY if both husband and wife both have individual IRA's)
  • Counts toward mandatory withdrawal amount, if you have not already taken your mandatory withdrawal
  • Distribution is not included in taxable income
  • You can transfer funds directly from your IRA to the University of Portland
  • You can transfer the gifts outright to one or more qualified charities, such as UP, but not to supporting organizations, or for gift annuities, charitable trusts or donor advised funds
  • Applies only to IRAs, not other types of retirement accounts
  • Charity must cash QCD check by midnight, December 31
  • Any rules established by your IRA custodian, such as forms, etc.

To learn more about these types of gifts, and to see an example letter to an IRA custodian use this pdf.

We are STAT!

The Students Today Alumni Tomorrow (STAT) is made up of more than thirty outstanding student ambassadors. These students are future business leaders, teachers, philanthropists, nurses, engineers, and all around world-changers who are building job skills and making connections with the broader UP community.

STAT students raise funds to support scholarships, student development, and growth throughout the University. They can also update you about current projects at the University and give you a window into what it's like to be a Pilot on The Bluff today. When you give through a student, you're providing young Pilots with the chance to support their school and make a difference!

If you see a number beginning with "503-943" on your phone, it may just be a student calling, and hoping to make a connection with someone beyond The Bluff. Take a few minutes to have a conversation with one of our students. Your support means so much to them!

Jordan Edwards
Assistant Director of Annual Giving, Student Programs
